چکیده

Despite the pivotal role of stem cells in homeostasis of oral epithelia the location of this cell population within the tissue is uncertain. How disease influences these cells in vivo also remains to be elucidated. In this study we have used six molecular markers to identify stem cells in normal and diseased buccal mucosa. Samples of normal oral mucosa (NOM), hyperkeratosis (OHK) and oral lichen planus (OLP) were immunostained for α6 and β1 integrins, keratin 15 (K15), melanoma-associated chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan (MCSP), NG2 the rat homologue of human MCSP and notch 1. K15, NG2 and β1 staining was continuous in the basal layer of NOM whilst α6 and MCSP were limited to basal cells at the tips of connective tissue papillae. K15 was downregulated in OLP whereas α6, β1 and MCSP were upregulated in both OLP and OHK. NG2 remained unchanged and notch 1 was absent in all samples. Therefore, the stem cell phenotype in OLP and OHK maybe altered in response to pathological signaling. Classification of these changes is essential to understand the role of adult stem cells in the pathogenesis of oral diseases characterised by abnormal keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation. Comparison of Expression of p53 and bcl-2 Markers in Oral Lichen Planus and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Background and Aim: It has been suggested that oral lichen planus (OLP) can be a potential premalignant lesion. Reports are also available on the role of bcl-2 and p53 proteins in malignant transformation of OLP into oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Due to controversies in these reports, the present study aimed to compare the expression of p53 and bcl-2 markers in OLP and OSCC. Materials a...

Molecular markers as an indicator in the malignant potential of oral lichen planus: A systematic review

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory disease. The progression of OLP to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has generated a longstanding controversy about the details of this malignant transformation potential. This study aimed to do a systematic review on the molecular markers related to the malignant transformation of OLP.METHODS: We searched the...

Assessment of Bax and Bcl-2 Immunoexpression in Patients with Oral Lichen Planus and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of probable immune-based etiology. The pathogenesis of LP is unclear, but apoptotic changes in epidermal (epithelial) cells have been reported. Destruction of the basal cell layer is observed and many changes in cell proliferation, cell repair and cell death occur in the injured mucosal epithelium. The aim of this study was to evaluate and co...

Immunohistochemical Evaluation of CD86 Expression in Ero-sive Oral Lichen Planus

Background and Aim: Lichen planus is an inflammatory autoimmune mucocutaneous disease. Stimulation of T cells and antigen-presenting cells (APCs), such as dendritic cells, mediates apoptosis of keratinocytes and basement membrane destruction. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of one of the immune cell markers (CD86) in erosive oral lichen planus. Materials and Methods: In...

Background and aim: Oral lichen planus, is a chronic inflammatory mucocutanous lesion which is defined as a premalignant lesion. Matrix metaloprotenase 2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 are protenases which facilitates invasion of tumoral cells to connective tissue and are over-expressed in premalignant and malignant lesions. The aim of this study was to determine the expression of MMP-2 in erosive and non-e...

Lack of association between Estrogen and progesterone receptors and Oral Lichen Planus

Background: Lichen planus is a T-cell mediated autoimmune and chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin and the mucous membrane. The results of numerous studies on oral mucosa have confirmed the effects of sex hormones on oral mucosa and the expression of estrogen (ER), progesterone (PR), and androgen receptors. Lichen planus is a common disease in middle-aged wo...
